ADVANCED ART Program

THURSDAYS, 4:00 - 6:00 pm, for high school students ages 14-19

Exploring the Creative Process (LOOKING, THINKING, and DOING), students will be trained as VISUAL COMMUNICATORS with guidance and direction from Design Street’s professional Artist Instructors and Trained Art Educators. Students will develop confidence in drawing and painting through a variety of techniques and methods. Inspiration from Art History, Literature, Nature, and Culture will motivate students to develop their own conceptual “Narratives” through a series of illustrative responses to Design Challenges.

Many students contemplate a career in the arts but are not aware of the numerous vocations which require creative minds and artistic applications. Instructor Rachel Hopkins will work with individual needs of students to develop artistic strengths in concept/composition, technique, critique, and portfolio development.

DRAWING and PAINTING will be the primary focus as students create a series of projects to prepare their portfolios for college applications, scholarships competitions, job interviews, and personal development. Students will participate in class CRITIQUES throughout each project, to develop skills in communication and working in collaborative environments.

Advanced Art Fall:
Have you ever wanted to learn how the character designs for your favorite animation or comic are created? Well, here is your chance! This year we are focused on character design. This fall we will learn the basics of drawing anatomy, improve our drawing from 3D objects—including live models, and explore different ways of rendering characters.

Advanced Art Spring:
Students will continue their journey through character design by learning about shape language, color theory and style. This class will culminate in a finished character design inspired by Legends/Folklore, showcasing student understanding of anatomy, style, shape, and color.

Materials are provided but students may choose to bring in additional supplies from home if desired. Certain projects may require additional work time outside of class.
